NSCPGD1298 Internationalt PhD-kursus i Inverse Problemer

Årgang 2013/2014
Engelsk titel

International PhD course on Inverse Problems

Kursusindhold
Subject area: Inverse Problems

An inverse problem is a mathematical problem where unknown input parameters are to be estimated from indirect output measurements. A typical inverse problem from medical imaging is tomography, where the 3D structure of the patient is reconstructed from 2D projections taken by an x-ray camera. Inverse problems likewise occur in computer vision, such as in the reconstruction of the scene and camera motion from multiple views.

This course will cover the basic mathematics of inverse problems, supplied with case studies in the form of applications.

Scientific content

The course will start out with a general introduction to inverse problems aimed at PhD students in computer science. After the general introduction, the course will split into several tracks:
1. The numerics of inverse problems
2. Inverse problems and optimization
3. Applications of inverse problems in tomography, computer vision and medical imaging.

The course will consist of 5 days, each split into a half day of theoretical lectures and a half day of exercises, application talks and Q&A sessions. One of the afternoons will be partly spent on an excursion and social event. In addition to the 5-day course, the students will be asked to prepare for the course by reading relevant material, and they will be asked to write a report on inverse problems in their own research topic after the course.
Målbeskrivelser
After participating in this course, the student should be able to
1. Understand the basic problems and standard solutions in inverse problems
2. Identify and formulate problems from their own research in the form of inverse problems
3. Perform numerical implementations that solve basic inverse problems
4. Be familiar with a set of applications of inverse problems, including computed tomography, optimization and bioimaging
