Content
Gothic Illuminated Manuscripts 1200-1400 is concerned with the workshops, artists, patrons and readers/viewers of various types of illuminated manuscripts, both secular and religious, produced mainly in France, England, and Italy, during the 13th and 14th centuries. We will discuss the relationship between texts and images in the manuscripts, workshop practices, and codicology. Also, we will examine how visual imagery of this period is related to ideas about spirituality, society, the body, nature, gender, history, etc. The course will also aim to prepare the students to work with objects in public and private collections as well as acquainting them with different methodological approaches.
