In 1913, Husserl published his monumental Ideen zu einer reinen Phänomenologie und phänomenologischen Philosophie I. We will celebrate the centenary of this milestone in phenomenological philosophy by a careful study of the entire text.Ideen I contains not only what is probably Husserl’s most famous introduction to phenomenological methodology but also one of his most detailed analysis of intentionality. Among the central topics covered by the course are notions such as the epoché and the transcendental reduction, the natural attitude, noesis and noema, the pure ego and the question of transcendental idealism. Ideen I is undoubtedly one of Husserl’s most important works and a classic of twentieth century thought. Husserl’s analyses ignited a heated debate regarding the nature of consciousness that was to influence the development of post-Husserlian phenomenology and continental philosophy.

The course is a module in the master specialization Phenomenology and Philosophy of Mind, but students not enrolled in that specialization are also very welcome.

In preparation for the first class, please read Zahavi’s Husserl’s Phenomenology as well as pp. 3-38 (the introduction and §§ 1-17) in Husserl’s Ideas I.

Edmund Husserl (1976), Ideen zu einer reinen Phänomenologie und phänomenologischen Philosophie I. Husserliana III/1. Den Haag: Martinus Nijhoff.

The text critical Husserliana edition is unfortunately very expensive. A much more affordable edition is also available:

Edmund Husserl (2009), Ideen zu einer reinen Phänomenologie und phänomenologishen Philosophie. Hamburg: Felix Meiner.

There is also a quite affordable English translation of the entire work: Edmund Husserl (1983), Ideas pertaining to a pure phenomenology and to a phenomenological philosophy. First book. (Translated by F. Kersten). Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers.
