This course explores contemporary topics of discussion in US scholarship and magazine writing. Using articles from Mother Jones, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine etc. we will discuss issues pertaining to class, race, gender, and sexuality as a way to investigate the current state of the American multicultural experiment. In addition, we will consult major texts from the rich academic American studies genre to investigate how canonical voices (such as Amy Kaplan, Brent Hayes Edwards, Michael Denning, Robert D.G Kelley, and David Blight) add scholarly perspective to these discussions. This courses blends academic scholarship, mass-cultural magazine writing (albeit mostly “respectable” magazines), with other news media outlets in order to gain a deeper perspective on major cultural and political themes in US society.
